Translation Efforts

As a longtime proprietor of the use of machine translation to provide rough passthroughs of translation of medias from their source language to english I am perhaps uniquely qualified to give a guide to my tried and true method of translation:

Step 1: Acquire source material:

This is easiest if the source material is directly text, but otherwise this can be counterracted for.

For ebooks, Anna's Archive is the place to go (do check the outoing links at the bottom of the page for external downloads of a far faster speed than the website allows)

For manga, check nyaa.si and then follow outgoing links if no-ones seeding (you might find a dodgy rapidgator link). Also check around to see if you can find translations into languages that might be easier to translate (such as russian, which is relatively common and you might have to check language specific scanlation sites).

For any kind of webtoon i think extract.pics should probably work or you can get browser extensions that allow you to screenshot a whole page (and then you can just split the image up)

Step 1.1: OCR the text (skip this step if you could find an EPUB or some other kind of document with actual copyable text in it)

Since i'm using Arch linux, this is a bit harder than windows, despite the sheer amount of OCR tools for my distro.

I've found KanjiTomo to be the most reliable, and also the slowest. OCRFeeder is okay as well. Normcap should be better than it is it's just kinda buggy.

For online tools, Poricom looks promising but I couldn't get it to work

SnowMTL offers a good rough passthrough quite fast as well

(if you have a PDF file, you'll need to get it converted into images for SnowMTL, Poricom & KamjiTomo, for linux there's a pretty nice application on Flathub called PDF Tricks that lets you do this locally, but otherwise there's a gazillion websites that let you do it

Step 2: Translate the text

For Japanese: DeepL, RomanjiDesu, Jisho (dictionary lookup)

For Russian: Yandex Translate

Step 3: Syntax and Localisation

Localising the text is to me the purest form of translation and something that is oft missed by amateur translators (and MTL). The way to achieve this in the best way possible is to try and find a 'phrasing of best fit' for every syntactical (sentence structure and flow-based), lexical (word-based) and aphorical (proverb/saying-based) difference; with the addition of a translation note explaining your choice of words and its relation to the definition of the original (sometimes you won't even get a particularly close fit and you have to bend the text to your linguistic will, in which case translation notes are definitley in order). Remember, your job as a 'translator' is not just to convey broad meaning (that's what the Machine Translation Software does), but to extrapolate out the inferred meaning of the text, it's linguistic intricacies, to really understand the author's choice of language, and adapt the broad meaning you're fed into something that flows well in English, not just something serviceable (again, that's what the Machine Translation Software does).

Step 4: Editing/Re-Formatting

ebooks: Just use Sigil for Epubs

manga: whatever image editor you use and some comicraft fonts

Snowman

*Red* Cardboard

Okay so here's a really obscure UK Basement Emo release. Snowman were a name that the Stratford-Upon Avon band What Price, Wonderland? went by in ~2004 (judging by their sole v/a comp. appearance), they released this great demo and then promptly changed their name.

The Band consisted of (i believe, since there aren't any credits to specific instruments on this release so they're taken from What Price, Wonderland?'s RYM page):

Andy Hemming (bass, vocals)
James Wright (drums, vocals)
Joe Caithness (guitar, vocals)

You can view inserts and the such Here & download Here (alongside their v/a comp. appearance)

Los Dregtones

The singular cassette demo

So here's a band I found whilst digging through Cedric Bixler-Zavala's back catalog. I think it was the first band he was in, they make an odd style of Psychedelic Ska Punk (with scatting and CBZ's signature manic crypticisms).

The band were around in ~1994 in El Paso, Texas and consisted of:

Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals, drums)
Ralph Jasso (guitar)
Jimmy Hernandez (bass)
Julio Venegas (bass)
Luis Prieto (percussion)
Brooks Miller (trumpet)
Adam Young (drums)
Andrew McCoi (drums)

In 1994 they recorded a demo, included personnel were:
Cedric Bixler-Zavala [Cedric Bixler] (vocals)
Ralph Jasso (guitar)
Jimmy Hernandez (bass)
Adam Young (drums)
Julio Venegas (artwork)

Jimmy Hernandez died of cancer in 1994, and Julio Venegas of suicide in 1996.

Cedric Bixler-Zavala would later go on to be in At The Drive-In (my beloved) and The Mars Volta (with whom he recorded an album inspired by Venegas' life entitled Deloused in The Comatorium)

Since there are no properly id3 tagged versions of their demo 5 Song Alibi floating around on the internet, I have taken it upon myself to provide them, ripping them from youtube and tagging them myself. You can download it here

Oh I also found a live video (courtesy of the Marble Shrine)

A directory of lyrics that rattle around my hippocampus 18 hours a day

Well I'm here to tell you folks that there is more to life

Than being walked on by the lame - The Drones: The Freedom in The Loot [2006]

Lunch in the park

Ruined for you by nagging thoughts - Self Defense Family: Talia [2015]

Trust this statement

There's no trusting states, man - Drug Church: Plucked [2022]

These things I read about the way the world works

I lift the spoon to socket and dig my eyes out

[]

Those things I do about the way the world works

Wonder will it amount to anything at all? - Drug Church: Million Miles of Fun [2022]

Slipping out of the yawning abyss

Calling each other names, pretending to reminisce - No Bird Sing: Apogee [2013]

I'm not good with depression

So I put my mind to other things - Self Defense Family: Everybody Wants a Prize For Feeling [2015]

Cynical not bitterness

Love my girl and friendships - Drug Church: Myopic [2024]

Well, anyway, back then life was going swell and everything was juuuust

PEACH-Y

[]

big bowl of sauerkraut

Every single mornin' - “Weird Al” Yankovic: Albuquerque [1999]

There's no such creature as the so-called '90s man

It's a myth, a lie, an utter fabrication

Every beach boy's waking dream is pornographic gluttony - Long Fin Killie: Love Smothers Allergy [1995]

We're never having fun

The work is never done - Lil Ugly Mane: DISCARD [2021]

The royal family is hiding in the dungeon and they're trapped

'Cause they got nobody on the outside to pay the ransom

Cops and the judges skipped down to go dancing

And the rest of their court has got more gumption than grey matter

Oxen are dead, peasants apathetic

And what's gotta be billed as a strange change of direction

Skip the election, let's hang a successor now

And let his chain sag lower than the motives in a the crowd

Redraw the borders in order to keep the order

Like nobody heard the king whisper his will into his daughter's ear

Years pass by before she gets an apology

That's stiffer than a board but lighter than ideology

Yell it from the rooftop

Sell it from the presidential residence

And let the effigies go up in smoke with the idol

Let 'em all burn in the fire

Do a dance in the aftermath of ash from the fire

[]

You can only be king

If you can sing a song for the sake of the paper trail

The blood money's printed on

[]

the inhabitant

Of one's man kingdom is another man's extravagant puzzle - No Bird Sing: Legal Blood Money [2009]

Dethink To Survive - McClusky: Dethink To Survive [2002]

A revolution in Belarus

I'll put my energies to other use - Drug Church: Piss & Quiet [2022]

Because there’s gotta be something more

Than lying in the front yard, naked, screaming at the constellations

I want something more than an apology to say

When I look the world in the eye

I’ll tell you, man, my friend William came to me with a message of hope

It went: “Fuck you and everything that you think you know

If you don’t step outside the things that you believe

They’re gonna kill you.”

He said: “No one's gonna stop you from dying young and miserable and right!

If you want something better, you gotta put that shit aside.”

I thought about how for thousands of years

There have been people who told us that things can’t go on like this

From Jesus Christ to the Diggers, from Malthus to Zerzan

From Karl Marx to Huey Newton

But the shit goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on

On and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on - Pat The Bunny: From Here Till Utopia (Song for the Desperate) [2011]

Oh, Aletta you have such nice skin - Self Defense Family: Aletta [2013]

You deserve so much happiness
You deserve so much more than this

You deserve so much more than this - I Hate Sex: San Francisco [2015]

If you're happy, I'm happy

If you're happy, I'm happy

If you're happy, I'm happy

If you're happy, I'm happy - Self Defense Family: Dingo Fence [2013]

Emulating PS4 Games on the Steam Deck

Somehow, PS4 games can be emulated on the Steam Deck pretty decently. Here's a guide to harnessing this arcane black magik for personal gain (& actually putting the games in your library).

Pre-requisites:

Filezilla  (do not forget the password you set) or Limewire to transfer files (or just download them straight onto the deck from whatever web browser you use)

Ideally a keyboard & mouse connection to the steam deck

Nested desktop (not needed but very useful)

decky loader with the SteamGridDB Plugin

Guide:

Step 0: Open the Steam Deck desktop mode

Step 1: Acquire 2 Versions of ShadPS4 (The game installer and the launcher, you can't install PKG files past a certain version of ShadPS4 but you can launch them from a newer version if you've installed them using and older version)

Step 2: Download this and copy all the files to sys_module (you don't actually need all of them but I cba top sort through them all)

Step 3: Acquire games (My directory, otherwise Dlpsgame.com or Superpsx.com should work or The Internet Archive's FPKG project)

Step 4: Install games (in the ShadPS4 game installer version)

Step 4.5 (optional): Go to the ShadPS4 settings and put in 21F41A6BAD8A1D3ECA7AD586C101B7A9 as the trophy key to unlock trophies

Step 5: Launch the ShadPS4 game launcher version & create a desktop shortcut (right click on the game)

Step 6: Add ShadPS4 to Steam as a non-steam game

Step 7: Right click on ShadPS4 in steam - Properties -> Shortcut > Paste the arguments from the desktop shortcut (Right click on Shortcut > Application > Arguments) into 'Launch Options' text box

Step 8: Use SteamGridDB to add images to the game and rename it to the name of the game

Step 9 - Profit

Step 10: Repeat steps 0-9 (for 0 you can use Nested Desktop as a much faster and more efficient way of accessing desktop mode) for any game you want to emulate
